Rust Repairs

Rust is a pain. It just creeps up on you. By the time you see it, its well and truly got a hold behind the paint, generally requiring major work. But left unchecked or fixed, can lead to all sorts of problems. From just making it look untidy or de-valuing your car right through to an actual MOT failure.

There are two methods, the best and only correct way is to cut the old rusty metal out, re-weld new metal in. This is a long and time consuming process, but once complete the car looks good as new and will last another 10+ years with no return (provided no further damage occurs and its looked after)

The second cheaper method is to grind the rust away to bare metal, correct the shape, filler and paint. This works well and 'should' give at least 2 years before signs of it return. BUT the rust still has a hold on the rear of the panel, so will still be working away behind the scenes. This process can be repeated, but you will eventually run out of car! Therefore NO guarantee will be given on these rust repairs

This escort had the second method applied. The rust hadn't really taken too bad. It will return in the future. At least 2 years hopefully, if no more damage is taken and it's looked after

This Mercedes had the usual wheel arch rust.

First step is to grind all the rubbish off, back to shiny clean metal.

Next step, smooth is out and coat it a rust inhibitor / converter. Then coat with a zinc primer to protect it. This goes inside and out.

Next step. A small skim of filler to smooth it all out, then sand it back so it resembles the previous arch when you first bought it.

Next step. Primer ready for paint. Small amount of stoppper to remove slight blemishes and pinholes.

Next step. Paint and lacquer. One arch returned to its former glory. Again, this method 'should' last a few years before signs of it creep back.
